Dawn came quietly and the tall man woke up, having to go to the bathroom. But since there was no bathroom where he was, he pulled the door of the shed to the side and stepped outside with his rifle. No one was in sight, just the sun trying to break through some clouds. The sky was gray and it looked like it might rain. “Great,” he said, looking up.

He stepped behind some thick trees for cover, slung the rifle over his shoulder, unzipped and let fly. He wondered how many men had been ambushed at such a vulnerable moment, but he quickly took his thoughts elsewhere, as he didn't like to dwell on failures like that and invite them into his thoughts. But, he did think about what got him to this place and what had happened. The memories came to his mind in a quick flash.

It had happened quickly, the switch from regular life to chaos and danger. But, the slide to that point had taken years. He'd watched it happen from his home in Detroit as the economy got worse and worse. Jobs were moved overseas, local factories and businesses closed. People started to lose their homes and move away. Scores of buildings were abandoned and left to decay. Whole factories were left to rot and be reclaimed by nature, with trees growing in them. Parts of downtown started to resemble a ghost town. The dollar fell in value and inflation crept up, until most people couldn't even buy what they needed to survive.

Gangs started to move in the streets. Essential services like power, water, and sewage fell into disrepair and became unreliable. Garbage piled up everywhere. There were not enough skilled people around to fix things and the police wouldn't even go into certain areas anymore. Murder and crime rates went up fast, and soon it was taking your life in your hands to walk down the street.

He wished he could have left far in advance of that point, but he still had a job running some of the computers in a big company. He used to have dreams of finding a place to live in the country while things were still good and getting setup on a small farm; maybe even find a wife and build a self-sufficient life. He'd need to save up a good chunk of money, and that would take several years.

But time ran out for any of that.

He did what he could in the short time that remained. He was still getting paid, so he decided to ride it out until the “end” when the company either shut down, moved, or laid him off. That way he'd have the most cash to take with him when he eventually fled the city. Not that any cash he'd save would be worth much, but he still had a little time to convert it into useful equipment and stores of value like silver and gold.

Over the past year, he'd been going to shooting ranges, getting familiar with a variety of guns and making plans to purchase some of his own.
